Cabriz Dao Red Wine 2017 (Portugal)

TOP VALUE

Producer Notes: The Quinta de Cabriz Dao is a blend of the indigenous varieties Tinta Roriz (known as Tempranillo in Spain), Touriga Nacional and Alfrocheiro and is aged in French oak. This deeply-colored red wine is medium-to-full-bodied, a bit lighter than wines from the Douro, with impressive concentration of flavor.

As Wine Spectator notes, Cabriz consistently excels in the under-$20 range.

Wine Advocate, 86 Points: The 2017 Cabriz Colheita Selecionada is a blend of 40% Alfrocheiro, 40% Tinta Roriz and 20% Touriga Nacional, aged in an equal mixture of second use French oak and stainless steel for six months. It comes in at 13% alcohol. This is more or less on par with the Grilos Reserva but a step up on the really inexpensive C de Cabriz. Actually, in many respects, it seems lighter than the "C," but the fruit is far more lively and expressive. It doesn't have that slightly baked nuanceā€”it feels much fresher. So, there is a reason to trade up. There is also some grip on the finish, and it tastes just great, the bright fruit dancing over the tongue. This is another nice value from the winery. The only thing to add: Drink it very young for best results. It's super now. That doesn't mean it will be as impressive as a value in 2021. It is certainly a nice performance in a mass market wine, which hopefully remains consistent.
