Producer Notes: A new brand from the infamous co-founder of Clande Sotol, Sotoleros spotlights small regional distillers at viñatas across Chihuahua. Sourcing microbatch distillates of both sotol (Dasylirion) and lechuguilla (Agave) as well as the occasional blend of both – an otherwise lost tradition rarely seen within the commercial category – Sotoleros helps producers to maintain traditional production techniques on an intensely small scale, with releases rarely exceeding 70 bottles.
Beloved for his work under the Clande label, as well as alliterative name, Lupe López distills both sotol and agave in Madera, Chihuahua, on the Sonoran border. Wild agave and sotol are harvested and cooked underground for 3-4 days with oak. After being milled by hand using an axe, the agave is fermented in wooden vats buried underground. The resulting ‘tepache’ is distilled in an unusual copper pot still with a wooden cap. Lupe adjusts his final proof with distilled water. 100% Sotol, this batch is a particularly approachable example of Lupe’s work.
