Sotoleros, Romel Lechuguilla, Sotol Lot 2 (Mexico) 750ML
Producer Notes: A new brand from the infamous co-founder of Clande Sotol, Sotoleros spotlights small regional distillers at viñatas across Chihuahua. Sourcing microbatch distillates of both sotol (Dasylirion) and lechuguilla (Agave) as well as the occasional blend of both – an otherwise lost tradition rarely seen within the commercial category – Sotoleros helps producers to maintain traditional production techniques on an intensely small scale, with releases rarely exceeding 70 bottles.
In several northern Mexican states, the term Lechuguilla has historically been used to describe numerous types of regional agave, as well as the mezcal distilled from them. Produced by Romel García in the small community of Chínipas, Chihuahua, this release from Sotoleros is an example of that tradition.
Made from 100% Agave bovicornuta, grown wild among lemons, papaya, and other tropical fruit. The agave are harvested at maturity, cooked in an earthen underground oven, and milled by hand using a mallet. The agave ferments in stone vats for 5-8 days, and is finally distilled in stainless steel pots with wooden caps. Twisting between rich earth and ripe tropical fruits like cantaloupe and kiwi, this crisp and lively spirit refuses to be pigeon-holed.
